FWD is an acronym for Front-Wheel Drive. It is a vehicle configuration where only the front wheels are driven. It is usually accomplished with a transversely mounted engine attached to a combination transmission axle called a transaxle. Some of the benefits are a more simple design and increased room in the interior of the vehicle due to no driveline running along the center of the vehicle.
