PCI is an acronym for Peripheral Component Interconnect. It is a high speed serial bus standard. Pci slots are for adding peripheral devices to a computer typically in the form of a dedicated GPU, but there are also audio, usb, analog capture cards, and pretty much everything else. PCI has actually been replaced by PCIe which is a newer faster version that comes in different physical sized slots along with different speeds.
